Stephon Marbury Refuses to Play

Is there anything unforgivable in professional sports? At times, it seems that having athletic ability trumps any egregious behaviour. Sports fans can cite examples of athletes who have had legal problems and scandals. However, Stephon Marbury may have made himself a ‘persona non grata’:

“…Marbury, who will earn $21.9 million this season, declined to play in last Friday’s game in Milwaukee when the Knicks had only eight players after pulling off a pair of trades. The Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - opted against any form of punishment on Marbury for refusing to play, but that might not be the case this time around.”

It may be that the final limit is a professional athlete who will not even attempt to support his team mates. It is not a contractual issue. It is not a health issue. It is a matter of loyalty to team mates who want to compete. How can any team now place Stephon Marbury on its roster? Stephon Marbury has shown that his focus is not about winning and the team; and every NBA professional knows that.

That is paying a heathy professional athlete $21.9 million dollars to stay away. [...]
