It befuddles non-dog people. Discussions about a dog for the next president dominates the news. The matter of selecting the dog is a hot topic online:
“Never mind the economy. Hold on a moment, Iraq and Afghanistan.
In his first news conference yesterday as president-elect, Barack Obama said that the issue of a “first dog” for daughters Malia and Sasha had generated more interest on his Web site than any other topic.”

Dogs are family. People who have an unwavering affection for dogs constitutes a strong demographic. That demographic cuts across political affiliation, religion, social-economic differences, nationalities, gender, age… it just important. It’s about dogs and kids. Sometimes priorities are just that obvious - and no amount of explaining will make it understandable to a non-pet person.
