Nike Recognizes Arien O’Connell

The uproar that followed the Nike’s Women’s Marathon in San Francisco was predictable. It was simply unfair to Arien O’Connell. Nike has corrected the situation:

“…Nike is announcing today that it recognizes Arien O’Connell as a winner in last weekend’s Nike Women’s Marathon with the fastest chip time, completing the full race in 2:55:11. She shattered her previous time and achieved an amazing accomplishment.”

Kudos to Nike for taking this action. And kudos to all those people who recognized Arien O’Connell’s stellar achievement and who wanted her performance recognized. Well done, Arien!

I think its a crock, you should not heap praise on this brand simply because they did not do the right thing! The right think to do would have been to recognize her as the true winner not “A winner”. She did after all beat the best of the “elite” group by 11 minutes after starting 20 minutes later than the “elite” group. This is truly unsportsmanlike, disgusting and wrong. I will no longer support the Nike brand as a result of this.
