Apple is taking steps to address the problem of faulty Nvidia Chips:
“…The affected notebooks include several MacBook Pro models: the 17-inch notebook, with a 2.4-GHz CPU; the 15-inch model, with either a 2.2-GHz or 2.4-GHz CPU; and MacBook Pros shipped in early 2008. All told, the affected MacBook Pros were manufactured between May 2007 and Sept. 2008, and all contain an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip.
Signs that the Nvidia GPU is failing include distorted or scrambled video as well as a blank screen.”

Apple is offering free repairs. If the repairs have been made already, at your expense, Apple will reimburse the customer for the cost of the repair. It seems that, when Apple does error, the company does its best to maintain good public relations. The handling of this Nvidia issue follows the Steve Jobs’ playbook almost directly.
