The Medicare card allows access to medical services. However, this identifier also presents a danger for identity theft. The reason is that the Social Security number is on the card. It ties a name with a Social Security number - and that is all the information that an identity thieve needs to exploit that person’s name.
Further, that Medicare card can be used for medical identity theft. It would allow a person to use a false identity to receive medical treatment. In the case of medical identity theft, the consequences can be deadly.
If there is a family member who is a senior citizen, remind them to safeguard the Medicare card. It holds information that identity thieves target.
