In 2007, melamine caused numerous pet deaths when it contaminated food ingredients imported from China. Once again, melamine is a health concern:
“The number of Chinese babies known to have fallen ill with kidney stones as a result of contaminated milk powder has risen to 432, officials have announced.
“This is a severe food safety accident,” health ministry official Gao Qiang, said. Those responsible would be “severely” punished, he added.”

For those consumers who are wary of Chinese imports, this is additional evidence of security concerns. There simply are not sufficient controls on the products. Many consumers will not feed imported ingredients to their pets, let alone their infant children.
