Countrywide Customers at Risk for Identity Theft

Millions of Countrywide customers may be at risk for identity theft:

“…In early August, the FBI arrested 36-year-old Rene Rebello, a former Countrywide employee in Pasadena and another man who is said to be involved in an alleged scheme to steal and sell sensitive personal information, including security numbers, of as many as two million mortgage applicants.”

Countrywide is offering free credit monitoring for two years. Potentially this data breach could cost Countrywide hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because of the length of time over which this data breach took place, it would be prudent for any former and present Countrywide customers to take steps to monitor their credit and use freezes to prevent their identities from being misused.

These goofballs took over a MONTH to notify their customers of this breach. On top of that, they are only offering 2 years of credit monitoring. Oh. So if I’m the criminal, I just have to wait 2 years from now and then pounce. That’s total BULLSHIT!!! A breach of this magnitude should cost CountryWad (sic) a LIFETIME membership in the credit tracking service. Nothing less than that is acceptable. My SSN won’t go invalid in 2 years. My loan number won’t go invalid in 2 years (unless i refi-away form the security-UNconcious CountryWad), and my mother’s maiden name won’t change atter 2 years. The information stolen still has exactly the same value 2 years from now as it does today, so their “generous” (cough, cough) offer of 2 years monitoring of credit is a JOKE, and is 100% UNACCEPTABLE.

Bring on the class action lawsuit. And soon, before the BofA merger completes so it will hopefully scare BofA out of the deal.

I am concerned for my Mom’s identity…
she has a home mortgage and a CD with Countrywide!
What do we need to do about the class action suit?

We received a letter, and when I called Countrywide, the lady told me that because my husband’s name was on the letter, only his data was compromised. WHAT??? I am a borrower on the same loan - DUH.. But even their willingness to provide 2-years of monitoring is a joke! Countrywide should have had a better security system in place. I believe they were purely negligent, and did not imploy the highest standards in keeping our personal data safe. If a class action lawsuit arises from their inability to sustain confidential data then that’s the price they’ll have to pay. I would even consider a civil lawsuit against the employee as well. As a borrower on the loan, you’re damn right I’m involved!!!

yes, i agree. 2 years of credit monitoring is not enough. We were a victum of this disaster and its cost us money and credit. I want it all, now!!!!!!!!!

I am thinking about all the time I have to spend making sure my finances are protected. A class action suit is not uncalled for when this kind of lack of security of personal information happens.

The same thing happened with me. My husband got a letter and they are saying I am not involved. Well interesting that we are now over $10k in theft from fraudulent checking accounts and dept. store credit cards that are being opened in my name. Gee, I wonder where they got my information?
We have taken steps to freeze our credit, but let me just tell you the check situation is another matter. A total nightmare!

I just found a site relating to this personal information theft with countrywide. I have been sent a letter as well and I agree with you all and I am very concerned. I believe this office in California is trying to make a case about this information theft. http://www.girardgibbs.com/breach.asp

I am looking into this and see what happens.

To Whom It May Concern: I am interested in suing for the Identity Theft by Countrywide; the way they handled this mess and also having still to be saddled with Countrywide as my provider.

Any suggestions or ways to follow-up will be appreciated.

We are interested in joining a class action against Countrywide and have made an on-line contact with Girard Gibbs as listed above. Does anyone know if the origination of the lawsuit has to be within the state of residence? We are Oregon residents.

I would join in a class action lawsuit against this company. As with the other emails here, I too was notified way too late. What good is 2 years of a free service? Nothing. Since Countrywide/BOFA will get a big bailout, why not sue these rats or maybe they can forgive us our loans.

I too was told that as a co-borrower I am not entitled to the credit monitoring service. That’s insane!! I would also be interested in being contacted about a class action lawsuit. I should not be the one to have to monitor my credit or my husbands as a result of Countrywide’s incompetence. Maybe to avoid a lawsuit they should be offering us all a chance to refi our loans at 3-4% interest rates like some banks are offering all the foreclosure people (with no cost to us in closing costs, paperwork, etc.). When do we, who have been responsible with our mortgages get rewarded?

This is simply unacceptable. What this was happening over a two year period and they barely found out amout it now? That’s bullshit. Not only that but they found out in early august and they’re just sending out the letters to notify. It’s ridiculous. 2 years of free service works for shit. What they’ll be protected for two years but after that nothing will be done to stop it from happening again. My mother received her letter yesterday and it pissed me off how they think two years will make up for what has happened. My dad has suggested that we sue which is what most likey what we’ll end up doing. Nothing less.

I too have been impacted. What happened to me was that the suspects created a fake ID and walked into my bank and withdrew 6k total over 5 transactions…because with my SS# they could get my account #’s…I have been researching the class-action lawsuit…if I find out anything I will pass it along, but if someone else has the right legal contact, I’m in!

I just received my letter on 10-29-08, what took so long! I am
terrrified of what I will find when I receive my credit reports. I have been receiving dozens of calls from companies I do not do business with and have been wondering what was going on and where they got my info, NOW I KNOW! Countrywide has helped tank the economy & now our lives! I feel as if its not a matter of if but when will someone target me.
