Air Canada Ditches Life Vests

Air Canada is removing life vests. The rationale is economic. This saves on some fuel costs:
“TORONTO, Ontario (AP) — An official with Air Canada’s regional carrier Jazz says the airline is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel.

The hope is that the on board flotation devices will be sufficient if the aircraft crashes in a lake or other body of water.
Of course, Air Canada could be more enterprising. At the bridge, before passengers board, one of the Air Canada ground personnel could offer a life vest as a rental item. For a small fee, to offset the extra weight, a passenger could rent a life vest. Of course, if the life vest happens to be needed and used, there would be additional service change.

Firstly, your title is misleading because you are talking about Jazz air inc. that is not owned by Air Canada anymore. Jazz is contracted to do the regional (short haul) flights for Air Canada.
Secondly, and more importantly, you are miss quoting the press release or news article. On purpose? This is about the removal of “REDUNDANT” life jackets from Jazz Aircraft. This means that they were extra, over and above what is required by law which still is one flotation device for each passenger. This requirement is met with seat cushions that float. Everybody gets one!
