Do You Twitter?

It seems that ‘do you twitter?‘ or ‘do you have a twitter account?‘ are the most frequently asked questions in my email for the last couple of months. The answer is - no, I don’t have a twitter account (or ‘I don’t twitter’ - since it seems ‘twitter’ is becoming a verb.)
There are several reasons that I don’t have a twitter account. I tend to be a bit ‘wordy’, as the readers here and my poor professors have found. Twitter’s a hundred and forty character limit seem a bit restricting. Further, I have no idea what I would want to post on a twitter account. I have spent the last week or so monitoring my day and seeing if there was anything ‘twitterable’ (let’s make the word an adjective too). Fortunately or unfortunately, there was not a moment that I thought ‘hey, that is something that I should put on a mini-blog!’. Some family members and total strangers might like to know. Of course, the sad fact may be that I may be boring mcboring.
In any case, the people who suggest that I do set up an account on twitter are biased. I would like to hear from you and use you as a small focus group. What are the positives and negatives of using twitter? What started you on twitter - or kept you away from the twitter service? I am ‘atwitter’ to know (sorry, it had to be said).

I like following the RSS feed in particular. I do have a twitter account; but I don’t think you should be posting there. Unless you have a specific reason. Dog Reader is great for RSS. If you post on Twitter, think about a different subject matter. (Sounds like you’ve already done that part)

People need to stop thinking of Twitter as a “micro-blogging” service, and start looking at it like a platform, or operating system. I have blogged a ton about Twitter lately on my blog. Everyday, I think of (and learn of) new ways to use Twitter.

Just today, Mozilla announced Ubiquity that will work with Twitter. There are already a few hundred applications that are utilizing the Twitter app. Everone, and every business can benifit from Twitter. Take your blog as an example … By simply using twitterfeed, anyone in Twitterville can automatically learn of your new posts (It posts the URL and a brief summation as a Tweet).

I find that to be a particularly useful feature. Additionally I’ve allowed Twitter to post to my facebook wall so that the friends that I keep up with there know when I’ve updated my blog. Additionally I’ve added twitter to my friendfeed account so that my blog posts are also updated there.
So even if you don’t plan on spending any time tweeting you can at least use it to effortlessly promote your blog.

I use Twitter mainly as a platform to get out when I blog a new post. Sometimes I will “Tweet” but this is rare. I have a widget in my blog that will automatically Tweet when I post.
