The Women’s Team Is Part of the Racist Olympic Blunder

It seems that Spain’s Women’s basketball team adds to the social blunder of the men’s national team. The women posed by a similar advertising photograph:

“The advert features two large photographs, one of the men’s basketball team, above, and one of the women’s team. Both squads pose in full Olympic kit on a basketball court decorated with a picture of a Chinese dragon. Every single player appears pulling back the skin on either side of their eyes. The advert carries the symbol of the sport’s governing body.”

To those who think that this is just a fun gesture, ask any child of oriental ancestry how much “fun” this is. It speaks of taunting, bullying and racism. It is completely bewildering why no athlete on the men’s team or the women’s team had the gumption to say that he/she was not going to do this - and that it was wrong.

And it is wrong - on so many levels.

Give it a rest. If you don’t have anything real to worry about, like maybe over 1 billion Chinese being oppressed by their government, you need to find something to do. I’ve had several female Chinese pen pals over the years. It’s not much fun being Chinese in China. I’ve also been to Kazakhstan and corresponded with a Russian woman. The Kazakhs are oppressing the Russians there and forcing them to move to Russia, Did it occur to you that the pics were meant as a complment saying we are all Chinese under the skin?.

What Do You Think?
