Brandi Chastain and the Mute Button

Brandi Chastain was a wonderful soccer player for the U.S. Women’s National Team. Her soccer knowledge may be encyclopedic. However, as a soccer telecast analyst, she is horrid.
There is a large group of soccer fans who gather to watch the women’s Olympic soccer in real time. Today, it was in the very early morning hours. Through the magic of some satellite wizardry, it was possible to watch the match between the USA women versus New Zealand in real time. And, by consensus, people wanted to use the mute button and eliminate Brandi Chastain’s comments.
It is so annoying when…
- the announcer is overwhelmingly biased. The non American team does have some positive attributes.
- the announcer is patronizing to the audience, explaining in excruciating detail what ’should have been’ or ‘could have been done’. It is what might be instructive at a beginners’ soccer practice. It is insulting to an audience who is watching the soccer game; and it really discounts what is happening on the field.
- the announcer keeps making historical references which may be personally meaningful and sentimental to her but not to the audience. It really is not pertinent to what is happening at the moment on the field.
NBC combines Ms Chastain with analyst Marcelo Balboa. - That is totally unfair to the viewing audience.

She was so annoying. It was unbearable, I was trying to watch the women’s brazil vs nigeria match and she kept going on and on criticizing both teams, especially Marta. She also kept stepping over the PBP announcer. Horrible horrible choice.

I agree with everyone. I’m using the mute on the TV. I like listening to JP but could NBC make some changes or tell Brandi to just stay with the game.

Brandi is just awful. How does she manage to stay with the network?

Brandi cannot shut up. The worst part about her announcing is that she has so much “wisdom” about what everyone should have done, especially mastering the obvious. Half the time she can’t shut up about the obvious such as “if the US scores another goal then the Japanese will feel really down.” No joke? You think a 2 or 3 goal lead might do that? The running commentary about all the things players are doing wrong is absurd. Brandi was never close in talent to the level she thinks these players are making mistakes. Sorry Brandi - the only thing any of us remember you for is the completely distasteful ripping off of your shirt to expose a marketing opportunity for a sports bra. Now shut up and let us watch the damn game.

[...] this game in real time with a large group of soccer fans. The sound was muted by mutual agreement. Brandi Chastain is just annoying. And it seems that we are not alone in that [...]

i completely agree, i thought i was the only one. I’m watching the gold medal match, and the all-knowing BRANDI CHASTAIN is ruining my viewing experience. Brazil is dominating the US, but somehow they are the better team. I am watching the same game you are, what world are you living in? Marta and Christianna are owning every player on the US, what a joke, but the US is playing with discipline and their defense is great. This is me ranting so it does not make sense, but yes Chastain=MUTE!!!! gametime, woohoo

The worst part for me is the repetitiveness of it all. Every game she kept going on the entire game about “crosses that had a chance to go in” me and my brother laughed every time this wouldn’t work against 13yr olds. The “hope” puns always used when talking about Hope Solo. And of course all the reasons you mentioned. But the biggest kick in the teeth was that Adrian Healey was there announcing womens games, I had just assumed the good announcers were busy with premier league opening weekend, not the case nbc just wanted to punish us.

There must be some type of device we can hook up to our TV that will allow us to mute an announcer while still being able to hear the game. Is there a sound tech. out there that can give me some advice. The announcers in all sports drive me crazy. They never shut-up! I listen to most games on mute.
