It was the first game of Olympic competition for the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. After the first four minutes in a game against Norway, the United States were down two goals. Those opening minutes decided the game.
This was only the second defeat for the American women in the history of Olympic competition. On both occasions, it was a defeat against the team from Norway. With an early two goal lead, Norway was able to play a more conservative offensive game and focus on defending.
Although this was not the start the American women wanted, they still have a chance to advance from group play. Two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. If there was one positive, the defeat happened early and allows the American women to regroup. The next game for the U.S. team is on Saturday, August 9th. It is a game against Japan.
The American women now have far less room for error. In a round robin tournament, there is an opportunity to redeem a loss. Nevertheless, the road to the Olympic podium just became tougher for the American women.
