For the freshman college student, this will become the time of year when your savings account will take a serious beating. The cost of books will be unbelievable. You will be surprised at how much first year books costs and it will be worse beyond the freshman introductory classes.
Since you are, by default, in spending mode at this time of year, here are three suggestions for your laptop computer that will make things easier (more expensive, but easier):
- buy an extra laptop battery. - You might carry the power cord (brick) around with you but there are situations where you will not have an outlet. And, of course, you will find that your laptop is telling you that your battery in nearing its final minutes on its latest charge. The extra battery will be a purchase that you will not regret.
- buy a set of headphones. - If you are in student housing, the headphones serve a dual purpose. It will save other people from having to listen to your music and it will allow you to mask any external noise. The headphones mean that you will be able to play your music and videos in quiet places like the library or study hall. With the music playing in such designated quiet places, the chances increase significantly that you will be able to stay awake.
- buy a protective sleeve for your laptop. - This is inexpensive protection for your laptop investment. It is a padded sleeve into which your laptop can fit. Then, the laptop (in its protective sleeve) can go into your backpack. The laptop stands a little better chance of surviving that backpack environment when it has that extra padded protection. There might be books, food, drinks, clothing and who-knows-what in that backpack. A protective sleeve can be bought for about five dollars (or somewhere in that price range) and it will help your precious laptop to survive.
Other people may have additional suggestions. However, these are basic essentials to consider for your laptop. And if I had to pick the one item from the aforementioned list to buy, it would be the least expensive item. It would be the protective sleeve for the laptop. That can save you in so many ways.

Hello,
Just off the top of my head, I would suggest some type of stand to elevate the notebook to increase the amount of air circulating underneath it and to improve the angle of the keyboard for typing, and a 2.5″ external hard disk drive for performing backups of any valuable data on the notebook (preferrably a ruggedized or semi-ruggedized model). A second AC power adapter for the dorm room might be useful as well.

I would also recommend an actual backpack that’s designed for laptops as well as a laptop sleeve. Some backpacks are pricey, but, considering that some laptops (like the MacBook Pros) cost at least $2000 USD or more, it will be a wonderful investment.
