Shipping Luggage: The Check-In Alternative

With the ever increasing fees for check-in luggage that the airlines are instituting, CNNMoney is suggesting that shipping is a preferred alternative:

“…In addition to possible cost savings, delivery services have other potential advantages over airlines such as delivery confirmation and insurance for lost luggage. Despite the fact that they’ve begun charging for baggage services, airlines do not offer any of these services and will not refund your money if your luggage doesn’t arrive with you.”

This is a method that, for many years, skiers have used to transport their ski equipment. The shipping couriers are experienced in shipping such items and, for the most part, they are very good about settling insurance claims. If alerted, ski facilities will accept delivery of the equipment. Experienced skiers just find that this is a safer alternative than checking through the equipment with the airlines. Now there would be an addition significant charge for the dimensions of the luggage.
