Senator Obama Changes His Stance

Did he really say that? - There has been another shift in Senator Obama’s position. Now he will support limited offshore drilling:
“ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday he would be willing to support limited additional offshore oil drilling if that’s what it takes to enact a comprehensive policy to foster fuel-efficient autos and develop alternate energy sources.
Shifting from his previous opposition to expanded offshore drilling, the Illinois senator told a Florida newspaper he could get behind a compromise with Republicans and oil companies to prevent gridlock over energy.”

Senator Obama may be able to defend this shift in policy. However, it is unsettling to add this policy change to the growing list of not-so-subtle shifts. What other changes in policies are politically expedient?
The presumptive Democratic nominee for the presidency may re-frame this as not being rigid and compromising. However, it can be seen as the same old politics of empty rhetoric and saying what the people want to hear. Where is the change? Is it ‘yes, we can… change our position‘?.
It’s simply disappointing.

Looks like Obama will outdo John Kerry on flip flopping.
The difference between McCain and Obama on this issue is that for almost a year gas prices have been going up and McCain realized this soon after and shifted his position before it was as popular to do so. It took Obama many months, as well as noticing the polls are showing increasing support for offshore drilling, to “shift”.
A shift in position is acceptable and is viewed as much less political if the shift happens closely after circumstances appear such as: 9-11(war in Afghanistan), housing crisis(bailout), gas price hikes(offshore drilling). To speak against drilling for months before changing your opinion, shows zero good judgment and that Obama would truly do anything to get elected.
PS- obama knows that not only did the Middle East/European trip didn’t help him, his poll numbers are actually down. Since there are some renewed calls now for a Hillary to be considered as a VP, and he really doesn’t want that, Obama would continue flipping being on both sides of any issue, and promising the moon to get elected.
