Michelle Wie Disqualified
Michelle Wie is an exceptional golf talent. Her athletic skills have been recognized since she was an early teen. However, Michelle Wie has not played the golf that her enormous potential had promised. Instead, mishaps and controversy follow her. This weekend, at the State Farm Classic, Michelle Wie was disqualified. She had failed to sign her scorecard. She left the scoring area before doing so and that is an automatic disqualification:
“…A well-trained golfer doesn’t leave the scorers’ tent without signing her card, not even for the few fateful seconds that Wie apparently strayed from the area Friday before volunteers called her back. It might seem like a small thing, but that tardy signature spelled sloppiness.”

This is just another in a series of missteps that has accompanied Michelle Wie. For example, there have been injuries that have raised questions. On occasion, her conduct has raised the ire of people like Annika Sorenstam, who rarely is involved in any controversy.
Michelle Wie has been on the golf scene for so long that people tend to overlook the fact that she is just eighteen years old. She is making some ‘teen errors’. The golf community and those who follow women’s golf may be more forgiving if the blame for Michelle Wie’s woes are not blamed on others. Those people blamed in her immediate circle eventually are fired.
The corporation that is now synonymous with Michelle Wie has grown her brand and provided her with a secure financial future. Unfortunately, Michelle Wie has not been allowed to develop her golf skills, along with her personal skills, at her own pace. She has been force to make her blunders on a world stage, when she is obviously not prepared. It is disquieting to watch. In spite of all her financial riches and athletic gifts, Michelle Wie is ill prepared for this level of competition. Unfortunately, Michelle Wie really has been pushed ahead and she has not learned how to win.

Michelle wie is to women’s golf what McEnroe was to tennis, Ali was to boxing, Fisher was to chess AND Tiger to men’s golf….
Inspite of or despite the contraversies etc. she has the screen ‘presence’ and has created tremendous interest in the game among millions , of all ages…by her charming looks, grace and her winning smile …apart from her great game.
After a fleeting glimpse at who is playing people will change channels …and not all the Annika Sorenstroms, Lorren Oachas etc can sustain interest despite their great game.
LPGA better watchout…and be realistic, if only in the larger interest of developing Women’s golf in the future.
At a time when Golf’s future is in the ascendancy please don ‘t kill the game with your unimaginative and inflexible attitude. Don’t follow the Arm chair pundits who are paid to say what they say…let them. People don’t turn on their TVs to watch them or even listen to their learned , at times pompous views!.
