Initial Home Page Slow to Load in Internet Explorer

It was such a frustrating problem. The initial home page, when starting Internet Explorer (IE), would load but very very slowly. It would take over a minute (and sometimes longer) on a cable connection. Once the home page had loaded completely, IE worked well and other pages were not a problem.
With the help of some expert friends at Spywareinfo and other security sites, there was a barrage of email exchanged for two days. We methodically tried hypothesis after hypothesis. With each failure, we were more determined and more interested in finding out what caused this. The number of things that were tried are too extensive to list here but we tried to be thorough. At the start, the thought was that it was a malware or rootkit problem. I should mention that the same home page was not a problem to load in either Opera or Firefox. It was just a frustration in IE.
To summarize a long misspent weekend, the culprit was the Google toolbar. The solution is to uninstall the Google toolbar and then reinstall it again. Then the initial home page of IE loads almost instantaneously. This solves the problem but it would be so nice to send Google a bill for all the hours that these security experts and I spent on this problem. - And to all the people who helped resolve this problem, “thank you - thank you - thank you!”. Marissa, please have this fixed!

Wouldn’t it be better to just completely dump the google toolbar? I’ve heard seen other people having performance, both in their browser and in their computer in general. Removing google toolbar and the performance returned to ‘normal’ (what ever that is).

Interesting. I spent all day trying to get rid of this problem for a friend. Since I use Firefox I never knew I had it too. I brought up IE so I can uninstall the Google Toolbar and now have to wait forever to get the menu so I can do the uninstall. Irony.

Try unchecking “automatically detect settings” in Tools Internet Options Connections LAN Settings. This worked for me. I had uninstalled the Google toolbar, disabled all add-ins, and turned off anti-phishing, with no results before getting this fix by our HelpDesk (thanks Derek!).

Have the same problem since 3-4 Month. Initial start page in ie loads sometimes (not always) very slow. It can be any between 30sec. up to 2,5 minutes. We have XP clients on 2003 Server Domäne. No toolbars here. No check at “automatically detect settings”.
Even if the system (xp, sp2) is completely new installed and only the first 93 updates are installed the problem occurs. If we install the rest of all updates and ie7 the problem is still alive. Even sp3 doesn´t fix the problem. The problem doesn´t have to do something with user-rights. It even occur with Administratoraccount.
So if anyone ever had the same Problem and have found the solution, please post it for the community.
thanks Markus

Spot on, Catherine. I have been fighting this for weeks and an awful lot of “try this and try that” Removing the Google toolbar which I have been using for years and reinstalling from the Google website had me fixed in five minutes. Thanks for solving this very annoying problem.
