A Massive Data Base for the ‘Surveillance Society’

Britain has been called the Surveillance Society. For example, there are surveillance cameras to track and record people’s activity. Now the tracking escalates. A data base will track and store telephone communication and internet activity:
“…A massive government database holding details of every phone call, e-mail and time spent on the internet by the public is being planned as part of the fight against crime and terrorism. Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.”

Essentially, it is a huge step toward the elimination of personal privacy. Where you go, to whom you talk on the phone and what you write in an email will be recorded. Coupled this with an ID card and medical information and the government authorities essentially know most personal facets of a citizen’s life. In the name of security, every person is suspect.

Is this really a new story of data storage or another story being masked?
Telecom companies have always held the data of every call you make, this is how they manage to bill you each month etc…The same with e-mail companies, just read the small print they too record data. Just look at Gmail and their boast of never delete another e-mail with massive storage available.
I think the true story behind all this is the Governments attempt to be tough on terrorists and the data protection legislation already allows private data transference, albeit under certain circumstances.
Gordon BROWN is forever trying to show that his PArty is strong on this and strong on that but as always they talk a lot but say very little. The track record of this government for computer systems is appalling with billions being wasted and projects over running by years.
So in short a government spin story attempting to boost its very poor poll ratings.
