Microsoft has identified the problem. The problem with malware is… “you!”.
“Software giant Microsoft has claimed user “complacency” is to blame for malware infections, and denied that its Vista operating system is less secure than Windows 2000.”

And Microsoft probably thinks that your mother dresses you funny too.

It’s true what they’re saying though. If you look at all the people with spyware etc.. It’s because they dont like being hindered during their browsing and just click “OK” to skip messages, not even reading what it says… If they agree to something by clicking yes, then surely there is nothing microsoft can do but ask you if you really meant to do that… but then they already did that, and people moaned!!

My brother is an electrical engineer. Most of the computer engineers he has worked with he was basically better at computer engineering than they were, and has been dealing with windows sysadmin type stuff for at least a decade now, and he got a virus the other day. Still doesnt know how, but he got one.
However, I dont even run an antivirus or antispyware and havent for the last 6 months, and havent gotten a virus, and I download alot of stuff online.
I KNOW i havent gotten a virus because I do run rootkit detecting software, do watch my open ports, and do watch my task list, and my system’s general performance is very noticeable to me.
The difference is I dont browse to alot of new websites, I only go to a handful of places that I trust, and can get basically everything i need out of the net on just those sites i am familiar with. He has to go all over the place for research, etc, so that makes sense. Also he uses IE and I use Firefox.
99% of the time you will get a virus thru IE due to your own negligence, or IE not being patched frequently enough when a new exploit comes out, only maybe 1% of the time a virus comes to u thru an OS-level exploit that gets thru ur firewall, slips into your system via the local network, etc.
I don’t really pay attention when someone tells me how secure something is because it is a relevant term; if you go surfing for teh pron 6 times a day and download and install everything anyone offers you, yes, chances are you will have a different experience with security than I will, regardless of the OS you’re running.
