Rev. Jeremiah Wright Misses A Salient Point

Rev. Jeremiah Wright is dominating this news cycle, both in the print media and on telecasts. There is no issue with Rev. Wright speaking. He is exercising his constitution civil rights. He has an interested audience.
In a salient article by Kate Phillips for the New York Times, there is one point that seems to characterize the disconnection between Rev. Wright and the American public. Ms Phillips writes:
“…Asked why he chose to speak out now, Mr. Wright said: “On November the 5th and on January 21st, I’ll still be a pastor. As I’ve said, this is not an attack on Jeremiah Wright. It has nothing to do with Senator Obama. This is an attack on the black church launched by people who know nothing about the African- American religious tradition.”

Rev. Wright misses a salient point. This has everything to do with Senator Obama. America is at a critical historical juncture. On that, all the presidential candidates agree. The interest in Rev. Wright is not attack on the black church. It is about how a presidential candidate affiliates himself with a church, a minister and a philosophical ideaology. The people have a right to know. It is doing political due diligence. It speaks, in part, to the substance of the man. The candidates expect it and it is a necessary part of the process of secting the person for the highest office in the land.
For Rev. Wright to say that this “has nothing to do with Senator Obama” is disconcerting. And Rev. Wright’s disconnection with what is happening - and the possible harm this is doing to Senator Obama - is simply frightening.

If anyone took the time to listen to the entire tirade that Rev, Wright is being villified for, they would see he is essentially speaking Biblical truth. This would, I’m sure, hit some of the Religious Right like a brick up side the head.
It is sad that the right has to go to such lengths, and that Senator Obama has to decry what was said, as I’m sure he believes it to be true, if, as he has stated, he is a Christian.
Stupidity comes in all forms, and never is it more omnipresent than in an election year.
There was a very enlightening hour on PBS last week (Bill Moyers Journal) where Rev. Wright spoke at length about his views. As a caucasian, and a Christian, if I lived in Chicago, I’d probably attend his church - where the values of Sunday are applied the rest of the week.

The Oracle certainly has his own opinion, but Rev. Wright uses Bible passages like politicians (of both sides of the aisle) use rhetoric to support their own views. Just because Wright cites of the golden rule does not make valid anything he has to say about America promulgating terrorism on others so it should obviously expect it in return. Nor does any of his other ‘Biblical’ references support Wright’s assertions of purposeful AIDS development by the U.S. to kill black people or the creation of an American drug culture to keep blacks imprisoned.
I, too, am a Christian, and I do try and live my life throughout the week as one - but this is no Christian leader we’re listening to - Wright is a hurt, twisted man who has decided that inflaming people with misguided rhetoric makes for larger congregations and more donations.
I’ll surely feel sorry for the good reverend having to live out his retirement years in that 10,000 square foot house in an upscale, gated (mostly white) community. America has obviously done him wrong.

I couldn’t agree more with ‘Jim in Virginia’, and less with ‘the Oracle’. Anyone who can’t see how completely wrong and potentially damaging Reverand Wright’s (and I use the term Reverand very loosely), comments are, is kidding themselves. And yes, it does draw serious questions about Mr. Obama, and rightfully so, especially when you also consider Mr. Obama’s relationship with known domestic terrorist William Ayers. Mr. Obama would seem to have some very strange and potentially dangerous bedfellows!

Oracle,
I’m amazed that you can’t see Wright for the Anti-Christ, Snake oil Salesman that he is. Go ahead, vote for Obama. Maybe you’re right and he’ll be an advocate for a much better America. Or maybe you will get exactly the future you deserve.
I for one, plan to “cling” just a little tighter to my guns!
