Airline Penalties: Avoiding A Charge for Carry-On Luggage

Most airlines will allow one piece of carry-on luggage. It must conform to measurements to fit in the overhead compartment. If the carry-on does not fit, most airline staff will have you check the bag and there may be an additional charge for this. To avoid this possible charge and being separated from your carry-on luggage, measure it.
The measurements should fall within the following dimensions: 22 inches by 17.5 inches by 9.5 inches. Those dimensions should fit most domestic and international flights.
If you want to be absolutely certain, contact the airline, with your flight number. The airline should be able to let you know if there are any oddities of that specific aircraft that would change the aforementioned dimensions. It is not only avoiding the extra charge if the carry-on luggage does not fit. Many people carry important papers, electronics or personal effects in the carry-on luggage. It is important to check the dimensions so that you are not requested to check that luggage that you intend to have always with you.
