Your luggage may be an unexpected cost. There are two things to consider: weight and number of pieces. If your luggage is over a weight limit, then there are additional costs. If you are checking in a second piece of luggage, there may be an extra fee. It varies between airlines. However, it is important to check because these two factors may add up to a significant charge. The worse case may be that your luggage is not accepted for the flight because it is too heavy. Take the numbers given as a rough estimate. As the cost of fuel increases, these figures are subject to immediate change. It is best to check on the website of the airline that you are using. Most carriers have their luggage policies stated on their site. As the experienced ‘road warriors’ suggest, avoid checked luggage whenever possible. Pack lightly and have everything in the carry-on luggage. If that is not a possibility, check to see what the restrictions and the penalties are. It may modify your packing.

I don’t trust my luggage to the airlines, who tend to lose it or steal from it. I FedEx overnight my luggage both directions. Fortunately my employer (I travel a lot on business and never for pleasure) has a contract with FedEx. But still shipping my 70# suitcase overnight is expensive relatively to the free or +$50 fee if I checked it. The FedEx price is insignificant compared to the costs I would incur if my suitcase were even delayed much less lost or stolen. Tip: don’t get taken in by the luggage shipping companies — they cost even more than FedEx, they require more advance notice, they pick up earlier and deliver later than FedEx — they add no value at all and provide worse service at higher prices.
