Solution to the Problem with Ejecting a USB Mass Storage Device

In trying to remove a USB device, there may be an error message. After clicking on the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon in the system tray, the following message appears:

The device ‘Generic volume’ cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later.

Microsoft has a solution that works well. The solution is found at the following link:

The download site has changed. The free utility, Process Explorer, can be found here:

This solution works well on a XP system - and, although not stated in the Microsoft Support, I am told that it also works on a Windows 2000 system. Of course, the usual disclaimers apply, even when following the Microsoft suggestions.
