Half of Iraq Deaths Preventable

There are some news items that every American should read. This is one of them:

“(CNN) — Casualties could have been reduced by half among Marines in Iraq if specially armored vehicles had been deployed more quickly in some cases, a report to the Pentagon says.”

The number of deaths and injuries to the military personnel number in the thousands. These are neighbors - friends - family… men and women asked to fight in a foreign war without the proper equipment. It wasn’t that the technology was not available. It was that the military did not have the necessary protection.

It is unconscionable. It is obscene. It should be criminal. And in the tradition of governmental obfuscation and ducking responsibility, there are demands for a investigation. A probe. Perhaps there will be another report. May there be a special place in hell for people who do not protect those men and women who stand and serve their country.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s one thing to put people in harm’s way with inferior armor if the know how doesn’t exist to provide better, or if the funds aren’t available to provide better if the know how exists.

With the enormous amount of money that is squandered on other meaningless ear marks, this is indeed obscene.

When I was younger I would get swept up into the “Glory of the Nation Crap”. Now I see through the political grand standing - all self serving. “Give ‘em a medal” , Make ‘em a hero. I threw all my medals in the garbage. The top politicians just love it when we all stand up and sing “God Bless America”.

Ah, just another reason to dislike big government — and our two party system. It would be so wonderful to have more than two parties to choose.

I spent 7 years in the US Navy from 1978 to 1985. The waste and old technology was everywhere. Some things were state of the art but most were vintage and should have been retired. It is obvious that some things in the military have changed but not enough.

I agree that it is criminal to not protect our troops if the technology is available.

Which brings me back to my first comment. Our government is too large and unwieldy. Smaller government would have likely kept us out of Iraq in the first place - and most other places we should not be.

Harrumph! I’m just another disgruntled libertarian.
