Ants Predicting the Weather

The article about predicting the weather had a huge email response. It is fascinating stuff and one of the email writers has given me his kind permission to post his note. - Thanks, Milt; it is much appreciated.
Catherine, I read your article on weather. I’m a firm believer in nature’s indicators. Before the days of fancy machinery, we had to stack and bring in the hay by hand and horse wagon. After the hay had been cut, rain would be the worst thing. It needed to dry. The wet would knock the nutrients right out of the feed. The hay would start rotting if not dried properly.
What my grandfather and father use to do was check the ant hill before cutting the hay. If the ant hill was all sanded up and the entrance was really small, no hay cutting was done. It would mean bad weather was coming. If the entrance to the ant hill was wide open and the sand was laid flat, that would mean fair weather. Cutting the hay could start. The cut hay would dry right. No rain was coming.
You might not believe this. Our whole year depended on good feed over the winter. It put food on the table and paid the bills. Those ants were always right.
