Your Dog As a Blood Donor

If you are a dog owner, most likely you have a love for all dogs. Have you considered that some other dog may require your dog’s assistance - specifically, its blood? Dogs need blood from donors. Your dog can provide a valuable, life giving service to a fellow canine.
With humans, the blood has to be type matched. It is not exactly so with dogs. Dogs do not have to be typed matched, as such. Your dog will be tested to see if it is a ‘universal donor’. Many veterinarians keep a call list of donor dogs who are available in an emergency. I am certain you can see the importance of such a list. Your dog will be screened for any blood related infectious diseases. Perhaps a call to your vet will explain the practices of the veterinary service that you use. There may be a central blood bank in your area. There, your dog can donate on a regular basis. This is an aspect of dog ownership that many dog owners, even experienced ones, do not consider except under dire circumstances.
Talk it over with your dog. The response is sure to be positive. Dogs understand about such things as ‘karma’ - do good things and good things will follow. Besides, there are cookies involved after donating. And then, perhaps, when the phone rings, it will be a call for your dog. Its help is needed.
