The Miami Heat: Quietly Losing

When someone is asked ‘which is the worse team in the NBA?‘, the automatic answer probably would be ‘the New York Knicks’. A closer look at the present standings show that there is a team that is doing worse. And that team is the Miami Heat.
Both the Heat and Knicks have won only eight games this season. However, the Heat have two more losses than the Knicks and a statistically worse record. The Heat have avoided the full glare of the media thanks to the dismal New York Knicks. There are no street demonstrations yet to have the Miami Heat coach, Pat Riley, replaced. It has become a standard chant of the New York Knick fans to “Fire Isiah!”, yet the Knicks coach remains.
This attention to the Knicks is not just because they play in an international media center. It is the daily drama associated with the Knicks - on the court and off the courts. There are lawsuits, player dramas, lopsided scores… it is a daily soap opera. Meanwhile, the Miami Heat are benefiting from avoiding the full glare of the media spotlight. It gives them some time to correct the situation and to start winning some ball games. No one knows better than Pat Riley that time is short - very very short. (And yes, Minnesota has four wins up to this point.).
