If you are a student at Montclair State University, you need a cell phone. In fact, there is no choice. A cell phone is mandatory:
“…First-year student Vuocolo said ‘School Phone’ — as in a Sprint-operated cell phone — is now mandatory for all students. It’s the first program of its kind in the country.
The cost: $420 a year for a base plan which is bundled into the tuition bill.
It includes just 50 peak voice minutes a month, but unlimited text messaging to any carrier, unlimited campus-based data usage, and student activated emergency GPS tracking.”

A tracking cell phone has become another educational expense. It is the cost of safety. Some may feel that it is an invasion of privacy, as the cell phone has GPS tracking capabilities. Nevertheless, if you enroll at Montclair State University, that is a school regulation. Most likely, this will spread to other campuses across the nation.
