Tasers Are Believed to Be Safe - Only Deaths Are Caused

There are comments from previous posts that tout how safe Tasers are. The following three headlines speak for themselves:
1. Taser Not To Be Used Repeatedly
2. Frederick Man Dies after Police Taser Him
3. Diabetic in coma shot with Taser out of fear he was suicide bomber
Where are those commenters who were advocating how safe Tasers are? What say you now?

Would everyone prefer suspects are just shot by police? What do we expect our police to do?
It is unfortunate that some people have died as a result but nothing is perfect. The fact is the device was being used on them for a reason. Police just don’t go around zapping everyone and I’m sure the decision to taser someone is not taken lightly. The Police MUST be able to defend themselves…period!!
Commenting on a side issue that always comes up: I completely disagree with the side that claims this device is used more on minorities than whites…that is ridiculous. I suspect that if a white man was threatening police, resisting arrest and creating an unsafe situation endangering officers and the public they [police] would not hesitate to use this on such a person. I doubt the police are thinking to themselves (in the heat of the moment), “maybe I should treat this violent white guy differently because he is white, how bad could he be”–c’mon people…life doesn’t work that way. The fact of the matter is that if more violent criminals happen to be minorities then it stands to reason (not emotion) that more minorities might face these sorts of tactics used by the police. Yes, there are trigger-happy, racists police out there–no doubt. But we can’t let a small group of bad apples spoil the reputation of those who are honorable AND we can’t expect police officers to be put in situations where they cannot use any force…I think they use enough restraint as it is given the type of work they do.
I hate to say this during this time of year but there are quite a few suspects out there that we all would have been better off with had the police just ‘removed them from this earth” as it were–you know, the pedophiles, rapists, murderers, etc. who have no remorse and seem to go in and out of our system at will committing the same crimes all over again..those are the ones I wish deadly force could be used on…it would make our world safer that’s for sure…think about it…do you want these types of suspects in control of a situation because a police office has to sit there thinking about what is politically correct at the time his life is threatened…that’s asking too much of these men & women serving us…
just my .02 cents
Peace

As a retired police officer after 25 years of honorable service, I am compelled to post this comment regarding all the Taser nonsense. There is no known case of a death caused by a Taser. Period. In the rare and tragic cases where death has occurred it is the result of some other circumstance be it intoxication (from anything), or other pre-existing condition.

Police officers are men and women doing a serious job in our society; an all too often fatally serious job. When confronted with violence they are not required to offer tea and cookies and a cozy chat to calm down out of control subjects and any tool at their disposal should be provided to them so long as accepted guidelines are maintained. It is left to constant training and professional standards to ensure the best and most ethical possible reaction to situations that by their very nature can get out of control in the blink of an eye. For all the Monday morning quarterbacks who believe everything printed in newspapers and reported on TV, I respectfully invite you to help make our police departments even better. Become a police officer. Try it.
