Is Megan Coulter’s school problems the tipping point? Her punishment for hugging has drawn an international outcry. Megan is considered a serious offender. She hugged two people and that, of course, increases the seriousness of the transgression.
Charles Sykes, for the Wall Street Journal, wrote an exemplary article on the situation in schools. Indeed, there are changes in school but some of the banned activity may come as a surprise. The list of banned activities includes:
- dodgeball
- tag
- talk on a baseball diamond
- swings
- merry-go-rounds
- sandboxes
The list goes on and on - and, as Megan Coulter can tell you, hugging is banned in some places.
Mr Sykes points out this salient fact:
“…We’re already paying the price for the epidemic of overprotectiveness. Congress has appropriated more than $600 million to encourage kids to walk or bike to school. An entire generation of kids now rides in minivans to schools where they aren’t allowed to chase one another, swing on swings or play dodgeball. And we wonder why we have an obesity problem.”

This article from Mr Sykes is ‘must reading’ for parents and those who are concerned about the next generation. It will scare you.
