No Hugs for Megan Coulter

Let this be a lesson to thirteen year old Megan Coulter. This time, it resulted in only a two days of detention for her behaviour. Undoubtedly, the consequences, if she is caught again, will be more severe:
“MASCOUTAH — A 13-year-old junior high school student was given two days of detention after school officials spotted her hugging friends after school last Friday.
Megan Coulter, an eighth-grade student at Mascoutah Middle School, was hugging her friends goodbye after school Friday when vice principal, Randy Blakely, saw her and told her she would receive two after-school detentions.”

It matters not that this infraction of the rules was after school hours. Megan should know that the policy is “displays of affection should not occur on the campus at any time.” Perhaps the days of detention will teach Megan a lesson. And that lesson is that some adults’ decisions are mentally numb; and that, given some authority, some adults will abuse that power and exercise unbelievably pathetic judgment.

The whole thing is ridiculous considering most are fighting for freedom overseas in that community. What many don’t know nationally is that a story on the same page of the local papers show athletes hugging at the same school. No warnings and no problems. Many neanderthals on the local foums are now bashing Megan like she is a slut and all kinds of bad. It is a very backwards area and now the hyenas are trying to put a woman in her place. The scarlet letters are all sold out!

Dear Editor,
I am a father of two grown children and I am proud to say that today they still hug when they see friends or relatives. I disagree that hugging brings on “OTHER THINGS” as the principal noted.
Think of it if the world were to show no emotion! Where would we be.
If they (the Coulter’s) really want to challenge this issue then what about the football players hugging after a touchdown or the quarterback placing his hands between the centers legs(although this may not be a show of affection is this not “NATURAL” for boys to be doing), really….. or baseball players patting each other on the bottoms???? Is this not a show of affection, even in a more public place???
I back the fact that we need to show MORE affection and then maybe we would not have this drama that we have going on in schools.
Are we being taught, through our most impressionable citizens, our youth, not to show any affection to each other…………where will be in the short future as a nation, as a world?
Thank you for this opportunity to voice my feelings. This is the first letter I have written, but I just could not stand by and let this one go by.
Sincerely
Jim Ballard

Please forward a copy of this to the Coulters as I wish them the best luck and my prayers are with them and our nation.

Touched a nerve regarding numb judgement and abuse of power. My 11yo daughter (an a student) is serving dentention today because I forgot to sign her assignment folder over the weekend and there was paper on the floor near her desk. Pretty Irritating.

Megan is my cousin, and I doubt that she knew about this rule. Her parents always taught her that hugging was a loving gesture. They taught her that hugging isn’t bad. Now, Megan doesn’t know WHAT to believe anymore. Some people are saying that one “incident” wasn’t even during school hours.
