If it is popular, politicians will want to tax it. - This is a small, local news item out of Chicago. However, if the Cook County Board is considering this tax, then it must be under consideration in other places:
“The Cook County Board has a new tax idea: a $4 fee every month on cell phones and other telecommunications devices.
…Stan Rosenberg and his family use a number of wireless and other telecommunications devices.
A count in their home revealed at least 10. At $4 a month for each one, the cost of a proposed new Cook County tax for the wired clan would be nearly $500 a year.”

The amount of revenue that this could generate will draw the attention of legislators. However, such a tax could be a significant hardship for people who now rely on things like their cell phone. The proposed start point is four dollars ($4.00) and undoubtedly this would increase annually.
