Joe Torre Decides to Leave

  • No Related Post

Joe Torre was offered five million dollars for next year. There were bonus considerations that would have increased the total to eight million, if the New York Yankees kept winning in the post season of 2008.

Mr Torre refused - and I am glad he did.

At this point, it is not just the financial considerations. In his years as a player and as a manager, Joe Torre has earned sufficient millions. It is a matter of respect and dignity. The job of managing that Joe Torre did in 2007 was masterful, in even reaching the playoffs. And then came the public threats on his job and the days of indecision. Joe Torre simply deserved better.

Perhaps the best indicator of what Joe Torre meant to his team was the loyalty of his players. Most are veterans, wealthy superstars. There was not a word of criticism from his players about the job that he did or the manner in which Joe Torre conducted himself. The offer that Joe Torre received was an insult. The Yankee organization knew that - and so did Joe Torre. Nevertheless, the offer lets the Yankee organization off the public relations hook, at least temporarily. And Joe Torre has the pleasure of saying “no”.

I hope the appropriate venue finds Joe Torre for the final chapter.
