Backlash Against College Credit Card Marketing

The college student is a prime demographic for credit card companies. Students are at the age where most have not accumulated financial debt and nearly every college student would like to have more financial liberties. Credit cards provide a solution but the marketing is being called into question - as well as the exorbitant interest rates:
“With small incomes and big bills, college students make a prime market for credit cards. But critics say the card companies take unfair advantage, luring students with free T-shirts and food — then snaring them with high interest rates.”

Some students are finding that credit card offers are appearing frequently in their snail mail. Their names and addresses are being marketed to advertising firms and students are finding that they are on mail out data bases. In some states, there is legislation banning the sale of student information to marketing firms. The educational institutions are unwilling to disclose the financial arrangements with these marketing firms. The schools claim that it is proprietary information. It is a means of generating income - and the student population information creates revenue. It is just at the expense of the students’ privacy and security.

Student Credit Cards - Pick the Right One

there are many student credit cards seeking to lend you money out there. Do your homework and some research to see what works best for you. Some offer extra points that can be used for purchases at bookstores, restaurants and movie theaters. Others have no annual fee while others still, offer 0% for purchases the first 6 months. You will find student credit cards offers that even offer extra points for a good GPA. As with any debt, the money needs to be used wisely and the bill needs to be paid off every month. If you cannot do that, you must at least pay as much over the minimum payment as you can afford.. Student credit cards can either be a way to build great credit or a road to credit destruction

Sure, having an ‘emergency’ credit card can be a good idea whilst living on/near campus, but I don’t think enough students actually work enough to cover any of their ‘emergency’ expenses.
I personally find it irresponsible for my university’s bookstore to allow credit card companies to buy all their bags with the low-cost side-effect of junk inserts, including plenty of credit card offers!
We students are already accumulating enough debt with the cost of tuition placed into loans, be they subsidized or not. This credit card/university subsidy needs to be cut out.
