Dell Trims Tech Support Jobs

Once Dell set itself apart from its competitors by its tech support. It seems that the emphasis at Dell is shifting away more and more from technical support. The emphasis is on sales positions:
“ROUND ROCK, Tex. - Dell Inc. said Tuesday it was cutting 250 tech support jobs at its facilities in Tennessee as part of a broad plan announced in May to trim costs and become more competitive with rivals.
Company spokesman David Frink said the job cuts were effective immediately. He said the affected employees were being given the option to apply for sales positions…”

Technical support from the manufacturers may become a distant memory. There are local advertised services that, for a price, will give assistance. Call for technical support to the manufacture soon may turn into a sales pitch. Dell’s market research must indicate that technical support is no longer adds to the company’s profitability.
