Too often the sports headlines are about wealthy athletes being in trouble with the law, using drugs to enhance their performance or something of that nature. Often the good deeds are quiet and relegated to the back pages of the sports section. An example is what Karl Malone, a former NBA star, did in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina - September 2005:
“…Malone, whose team cleared 114 lots, said he brought 18 vehicles to Pascagoula, including a backhoe, three bulldozers and several RVs for him and his crew.
…Malone, 42, an experienced truck driver and logger who was born in Bernice, La., spent 12 hours a day behind the wheel of his heavy machinery.
“We started every day at seven in the morning and didn’t quit until we got it done,” he says.”

This wasn’t a leading news item. It wasn’t signing a check, through an accountant, for a tax reduction with the revenue service. It was about showing up and putting in many long days of work. Kudos to Mr Malone and his crew. Sports stories like these should be remembered.
