From first hand reports, it was chaotic. The Chicago Marathon was canceled, while the race was underway. On Sunday, October 7th, the temperature in Chicago was eighty seven degrees ( 30.5 Celsius). One man died and hundreds more required medical attention.
Communication between the race officials was poor - and some runners had no idea what was happening. There was a lack of adequate water for the runners and, under those weather conditions, that was simply dangerous. Runners were unsure whether the race was continuing or was canceled.

Some runners were wondering why there was a shortage of supplies. This is the thirtieth running of the marathon and one marked by tragedy. The irony is that Chicago is bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.
