There are numerous services that can use your old cell phone - which might be unused in some drawer. One such service is ReCellular:
“…To some, these cell phones offer an opportunity to communicate in a way that they never have. The materials that comprise our old cell phones can also be recycled and reused to make many other products…”

This can be a tax deductible donation. And, on the link mentioned above, there is information about how you can protect your private information. There is a page that focuses on eliminating your personal cell phone data.

Donating a used cell phone is a fine idea, but be sure who you are donating to. As someone who has worked in the cellular business, I saw many independent dealers collecting cell phones for ‘ a cause’ (name 1, any will do), and instead of turning them over, they would do a small check on the phone to assure minimal working condition, and then resell the phone as a ‘refurbished model’. These were sold in white boxes, with the very cheapest charger, and usually a very spare manual - sometimes a genuine one, but many times photocopied. The battery was not replaced, and besides the basic deception, the buyer wasn’t getting what he paid for, and the donating party was totally ripped off.
