If overcoming adversity with grace is a consideration for Manager of the Year, Joe Torre might be one of the leading contenders for the award. Earlier this season, when the New York Yankees were floundering, there was considerable speculation in the media that his job was in jeopardy. Not only has Mr Torre survived a horrible first half of the season, but his team is on the verge of securing a playoff position. And, at the moment, the Yankees are only a game and a half behind the Boston Red Sox in the American League East.

Through this season, there have been a raft of strange injuries and changing personnel. Not only has Mr Torre managed superstar egos but there have been the names of new fresh faces appearing on the lineup card. Having a core of highly paid superstars does not guarantee wins, as was evident earlier in the season. For that early lack of success, Mr Torre was the recipient of much of the criticism. Now that the team has flourished and in the contention for post season play, it seems only fair that Joe Torre receive his share of the credit.

This has not been an easy season. For example, there have been barbs from a former player and some of the New York press were scathing during the time when the team struggled. Success under ideal conditions is expected. Success while constantly battling adversity is a major accomplishment. It has not been just about baseball. It has been about people - and I, for one, think that Joe Torre should be considered seriously for the honor.
