Anna Chakvetadze is not a household name yet - but she soon will be. Perhaps the sports writers will shorten her name to ‘Anna C’. She is making people take notice at the U.S. Open.

Anna is another Russian tennis player. She is only twenty years old and does not have the reach of a six foot two inch Maria Sharapova. Anna is only five foot seven inches. She makes up for the height disadvantage with great preparation, wonderful footwork and changes of pace. At the U.S. Open, she is through to the semifinal. This is her first semi finals ever in a Grand Slam event.

This may not be the event where Anna Chakvetadze breaks through and wins a Grand Slam tournament (Justine Henin may be unbeatable at this point). It will not be for a lack of trying. Ms Chakvetadze just plays every point and is great fun to watch. She is going to capture one of these Grand Slam events… it’s just a matter of when.
