No Book Reading for Twenty Five Per Cent of the U.S.

Book sellers and authors must dread numbers like this. Approximately twenty five per cent of the U.S. population have not read a book in the past year:
“…Analysts attribute the listlessness to competition from the Internet and other media, the unsteady economy and a well-established industry with limited opportunities for expansion.”

Perhaps it also reflects upon our ‘instant-everything’ culture. There is an immediacy to so many things. It is a stress to the attention span now if the information does not come in a sound bite, a text message, a voice mail…

I think the numbers are even worse than they make it out to sound, I think it is more like 75 percent that do not read books, especially with the advent of the internet.
