Baking Soda and Putting Out Small Fires

It may be a good idea to keep some baking soda handy in the kitchen. It can be used to control small fires that can happen when cooking:

“For small cooking fires (frying pans, broilers, ovens, grills), turn off the gas or electricity if you can safely do so. Stand back and throw handfuls of ARM & HAMMER® Baking Soda at the base of the flame to help put out the fire…”

Of course, any brand of baking soda will be effective. The baking soda releases carbon dioxide which prevents the fire from feeding on its needed oxygen. So, in addition to using the baking soda with the pets, it is a safety item in the kitchen. Perhaps add a few more boxes to the shopping list…
