September always seemed like the month of beginning. School started and it was exciting. Perhaps that is just a reflection of my having been a student for far too long. Now, it seems that September is the month that starts the worry about safety and security.

Bulletproof backpacks can be on the list of back to school supplies. Some schools are requiring that students only use see-through backpacks. And some parents are wondering what back to school clothing comes with Kevlar:

Is it bulletproof? Is it stab resistant? It is a sad commentary about us, if these are the questions that need to be asked. We are sending the children to school and not to war. What have we done to ourselves?
