Backlash Against Bottled Water

There seems to be more and more of a backlash against bottled water. People have reacted to the fact that sometimes, as in the case with Aquafina, it is treated tap water. Furthermore, there are environmental concerns about the bottled water:
“…Voss water is equally peripatetic, journeying from a place called Aust-Agderin, Norway, just south of the North Pole. A bird flying from there to L.A. would travel about 5,400 miles. The ships that cart the stuff to our shores travel farther.
San Pellegrino (also called Pellegrino) travels some 10,000 miles from Italy. And Ty Nant water, in the flashy cobalt blue bottle, covers more than 5,300 miles from the middle of Wales in the U.K. However, the bottles, which according to a West Coast importer have been made in Germany, voyage some 600 miles before they even get to Wales to be filled.”
It seems that water can make a ‘fashion statement’ too. Apparently, Bling H2O is bottled in Swarovski crystal covered bottles. - It’s forty dollars a bottle, according to the website. I’ll call Bill at Microsoft and tell him I’m thirsty.

Hi Catherine!
Interesting info. I did see a notice of the Aquafina company on the News. While it did not say “spring water” on it, the glaciers on the label ruse you into thinking it is. I stopped drinking Dasani the second I noticed “Product of Coca-Cola” imprinted upon it.
I’ve always wondered about the so called very good bottled waters from foreign countries, yet traveling so far the possibility of contamination or health content being lost along the way.
I usually try to stick to the ones that noticeably taste a bit bitter or dirty (as strange as it sounds) as those usually have the highest mineral content. $40 is way to much for a bottle of water :P. Even Voss is expensive for water, not being gross or anything, but when you think of it in terms of paying $3 for something you will return to the earth in a matter of hours, seems such a waist.
I usually stick with Evian (which is naive :p) or Fiji. Those of which I can directly taste the mineral content in. The most unhealthy thing about bottled water is the plastic it is in. Always stick with the (RECYCLE TRIANGLE) #1 labeled recycled plastic. Usually on the bottom of the bottle. I didn’t know this before, but the # inside of the recycle triangle represents how many times it’s been recycled. The lower the #1 the better, as less plastic content will be found in the water.

The environmental impact of all of these bottled water is important to consider. If I need to buy bottled water while I am out running errands, then I will choose one that was produced locally. Aquafina says on its website that they have 33 bottling facilities in the US and Canada, so you know it traveled a shorter distance to get to your corner store than a bottled water that comes from a spring in another country. Yeah, it’s tap water, but it’s purified enough to make me confident it’s safe– a 7 step process with reverse osmosis. I just read the fine print on the bottles before buying anything.
