According to Reuters, The New York Times is returning to free access for all its columns, including the editorials:
“NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Times Co. plans to stop charging Internet users for access to its columnists and Op-Ed pieces on a section of its Web site known as TimesSelect, The New York Post reported on Tuesday.”

Perhaps it would be too much to have The New York Times refund some of the money paid into that service.
One other annoyance that some online publications, like The New York Times, have is the registration process to access the page. I, for one, wish that that registration process were eliminated. There are other means to obtain the demographic data. Besides, the registration process is bypassed easily with tools like bugmenot, which also is available in a Firefox extension. I can assure you that the registration process ‘bugs’ people…
