Oscar the Cat Praised in the New England Journal of Medicine

Dr. David Dosa is a medical doctor and an assistant professor at Brown University. Dr. Dosa’s training and profession most likely do not lend themselves easily to anthropomorphizing. Undoubtedly, Dr. Dosa does not write many articles praising the diagnostic acumen of a cat, specifically Oscar the cat. Nevertheless, in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine (volume 357: 328-329; July 26, 2007), Dr. Dosa writes about the medical expertise of Oscar the cat. And Dr. Dosa writes eloquently:

Shakespeare, in Hamlet, wrote: “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy“. - Dr. Dosa probably would agree with that… and so would Oscar.

How wonderful that Oscar the cat is loved and recognized for his feline gifts. And not discarded because of his indiference to healthy people.

My cat, named Moses for his fatherly protectiveness even as a kitten, presided over the illness/deaths of two 10 month old brother kittens - not related to him- with incurable, fatal FIP (Feline Infectious Periotinitus).

Moses was just a year old himself. Yet he knew who was suffering and whose death was imminent. First he curled his large black body around Oliver keeping him warm and grooming him till the morning when I took him to the vet for a last visit. Then 3 weeks later it was Biscuit’s turn to get Moses care during the day when I was at work. Truly as I went out the front door, Moses would be there on the couch wrapped around Biscuit he and would stay there till I returned.

I was so moved by this and this deepened my bond with Moses. I felt he and I were in tandem in our love and care for these two sweet kittens.

This instinct, this animal knowing is one of the miracles present in our lives.
