For the sake of simplicity, consider a rootkit as malware that is hidden. It is intentionally cloaked to avoid detection by the conventional security measure that one has to protect the computer. McAfee will be offering a free program to address the rootkit problem:
“On July 26, McAfee will begin offering a new application called Rootkit Detective, designed to detect and remove dangerous rootkit attacks. The software will also help end-users ward off the threats, as well as funnel new intelligence into the company’s ongoing research operations.”

It is a reciprocal relationship. The computer user can use this free application to find and remove rootkit problems. In exchange, McAfee receives a wealth of user data when the program sends data back to the McAfee data bases. It helps McAfee be up to the minute, in terms of rootkit security threats. Undoubtedly, the security community will put this program to the test.
