You might need a permit in New York City to take a picture or make a video:.
“Until recently, New York City had no written rules governing the issuance of photography and film permits. After the NYCLU filed a federal lawsuit challenging the MOFTB permit practices, including its requirement that all photographers and film makers obtain permits and have proof of $1 million of insurance, the city agreed to adopt written rules and to narrow its permit scheme.”

The regulation applies to a group of two or more. - It seems that a family visiting New York City would constitute a group of two or more. That makes being tourist in a family group, in New York City, requiring a photography permit. And using a tripod for ten minutes requires a permit. - One wonders what is required in order to obtain a permit; how much these ‘free’ permits really cost; what data base will use this information; and what the City of New York is paying some bureaucrat to come up with such rules. Perhaps the argument will be made that this is yet another way to keep the streets and the city safer…

I have actually been wondering about the laws regarding taking pictures of city scenes, people walking around, etc., for blogs and such. It is ridiculous that we even have to think about these things. It used to be we just took pictures of whatever we wanted, and used them as we desired. As far as New York goes, they certainly are not adding to their tourist industry. The less pictures that can be taken, the less interests there will be in visiting. Pictures can only bring in revenue, these people need to get their head’s checked. There isn’t a tourist around who is going to take time out of their busy vacation to go get a photo permit. For some people, taking a vacation is all about bringing back the pictures, and in this case, there will be one less reason to visit NYC.
