Surveillance Cameras in Washrooms

There used to be an expectation of privacy when using a public restroom. It seems that is an antiquated notion. A Cheshunt pub has surveillance cameras watching its patrons, even in the washroom:
“…He said: “There are cameras in the ladies and gents toilets at the pub in Cheshunt and at a number of other pubs.
“They are to keep an eye on any potential vandalism and general behaviour. The reason we do it is just for safety and to stop any problems.”

It seems that, in the name of security, the public can discard the concept of personal privacy - even in the washroom.

I hope they have a sign up making it VERY CLEAR that they have those cameras running. Then I will be sure never to visit that place again. AND, I hope somebody sues them for invasion of privacy.

Oh grow up! If you’re not doing anything illegal in there, what are you worried about? It is unlikely that the cameras are aimed into stalls or down the line of urinals, so what? Are you afraid somebody might see you peddling your ecstasy or coke, or just adjusting all that padding?
Shoot, why not just flash the camera and give the poor bored security guys a giggle.

This conversation is all good, but who is to say what exactly is happening with the video that is made of the events in the Restrooms? If you know the cameras are there, someone may decide that it constitutes acceptance and feel they can do whatever they wish with the pictures or video. How many times have you seen ads on the Net to watch someone using the bathroom, or even better an ad for live video? There are any number of people who could use this for other than what is defined as the primary purpose. And who’s to say that the cameras would not be pointed at the person as they ’sit’ . How else would you know who is doing what. As for me, I’d probably tape an LED flashlight pointing to the lens of the camera and let them see the light.

Bring on the surveillance. Post the signs in plain sight on the doors of
the wc and let them rip.
