Kelsey Smith: Tragedy in the Heartland

Some news items strike at our core. - The news was that Kelsey Smith’s body had been found. It was jolting. It is difficult to say why certain news items have such an impact. Perhaps it is easy to identify with that person. Perhaps it was how common the every day task was, when Kelsey was abducted. Who hasn’t made a quick stop to buy an item at a local mall? It was early evening, still light outside with the long mild days ahead. Who thinks about abduction? It was the weekend - a Saturday night in Kansas.
Kelsey Smith had graduated from high school - less than two weeks ago. It must have been such an exciting time. University - perhaps veterinary school - was before her. It was a time of great promise and a time for following dreams. Who knew that evil lurked in the parking lot?
It is sad - it hurts the heart.

I don’t think I have ever endured such a jarring impact as I have with Kelsey’s case. This is just a horrific story and my heart really hurts for her family/friends.

What a sad world we live in, that you can’t be safe, out in broad daylight, in a public place like a target parking lot. I mean really what does that say about our society? Punishment for murder and other violent crimes in our country just isn’t harsh enough, to deter offenders. It is just heartbreaking for the family. I have been watching the news all morning today, and Kelsey’s tragedy was only mentioned in passing. The News is too obsessed with the nonsense that is Paris Hilton. I am so sick of this, you have a young lady with so much promise and class, taken away from the world and her family senselessly…then you have a spoiled rich brat, who has broken the law, and the latter gets more press…wth is wrong with the news stations?

It is because Kelsey reminds me of my own daughter that this story hit my gut as it has.
